| Children of all ages need books. Books can stir a child's imagination, improve his self-concept, develop his sensitivity to others, arouse his curiosity about the world, help him develop a larger vocabulary, and more. By sharing stories, songs and rhymes with babies, toddlers and preschoolers, parents and libraries are helping children prepare for the task of reading. Storytime at the St. Tammany Parish Libraries introduces a child to the best in children's literature. Picture books provide a wide range of artistic styles and treatments which help to develop a sense of color, design, and beauty. Because a child responds naturally to the rhythm of words and the repetition of sounds, storytimes include nursery rhymes, poetry, fingerplays and songs. In many cases this is also the child's first group listening experience. As the child attends storytime regularly, he will develop an enjoyment and appreciation of literature, the ability to concentrate, and to participate in group activities.
