Accelerated Reader™ and Reading Counts! Programs

Accelerated Reader™ and Reading Counts! programs are sponsored by individual schools in St. Tammany Parish. St. Tammany Parish Library is not affiliated with, and does not participate in, Accelerated Reader™ or Reading Counts! programs.

The tests for the programs cannot be taken at any branch of the St. Tammany Parish Library. The St. Tammany Parish Library does not label books with reading levels or points. Also, Accelerated Reader™ and Reading Counts! lists vary from school to school.

But you can find many of the books on the Accelerated Reader™ and Reading Counts! lists at your St. Tammany Parish Library. Many of your favorite books and most of the children's books that are considered "classics" are on these lists. Library staff members are eager to help you find a book. Finding the right book requires some effort and patience. Here are some tips:

• Bring your copy of your school's list. Or bring a list of several books you are interested in, and you are more likely to find something you will like.
  

• To make sure you get the books you want to read, come to the library a few weeks before you are scheduled to take your test.
  

• Use the St. Tammany Parish Library catalog to see if the book you want is available. You can place a hold on a book from home from the online catalog. You can also call your local branch library and ask them to hold the book for you.
  
• Remember that other students are looking for similar books. If the book you want is checked out or your branch does not have a copy of it, in most cases the book can be borrowed from another St. Tammany Parish Library branch or from another library system. But please be aware that this process may take at least a week, and possibly as long as a month or more.
  

• Don't be afraid to try something you might not usually like to read. Who knows? You might enjoy it.
  
• If you like a book by a certain author, chances are you may like other books by that author. Check your list to see if you can take a test on other books by that author
